Psychologists state that habits begin as habit loops or patterns which can be broken down into three stages: the trigger or cue, the routine and the reward. The cue is that part of the loop which sets your brain and body to initiate the act that you want to become a habit. The routine is simply the behaviour or act that you want repeated, while the reward is the payoff that reinforces your brain to keep repeating the act. Initially, every act that you want to make a habit is an intentional act. As you keep progressing and repeating these acts, your brain goes on auto-pilot and you perform the act as an automatic habit.
If you are trying to get into the exercise habit, here are a few ideas to ponder on. First, do not try to take on too many things at once. Try to ease yourself into a new habit one step at a time. Instead of creating a long list of habits to start, choose one and start focusing on it. And instead of making long-term plans like running and building speed every morning, break down your goals into manageable chunks. It is also a good idea to write down a specific plan on how to achieve your goals. And then, simply do what you have set out to be a new habit. And oh, remember to make it fun.
